Established start-ups gaining traction.

This year sees a relatively mature cohort with two-thirds of the group 6+ years old, an indicator that established startups have been gaining traction through the pandemic in supporting their customers with existing or new services. The standout is six year old startup, GO1, which supports workforce learning and became Australia’s first EdTech unicorn during the year. On the flip side, the proportion of <3yo startups in this cohort has reduced, perhaps showing how difficult it has been for new startups to get off the ground over the past few years.

2/3 B2B Model. 1/3 supporting institutions.

Similar to last year, EdTech is strong in Management Systems that support schools and universities in their digital processes. Around two-thirds of the 2021 cohort operating in a B2B model.  This year sees an increase in startups supporting international education as the sector prepares for what is likely to be a big 2022, with teams such as Adventus and CohortGo prepping for growth.

Education management is also a strong segment in the 2021 cohort as EdTech start-ups support pre-schools, schools, universities and companies to deliver digital learning solutions and administrative efficiencies – school management platform, Digistorm, education analytics startup Octopus BI and Storypark, a platform for tracking and communicating early learning development, are examples in this segment.

This year also sees an increase in the Workforce and Skills segment with Elenta and How Too joining the list.
